Composition Day 2024

This past Saturday we had our composition competition at the studio. Students who chose to make a composition spent a month working on this project. Some students used basic chords and rhythms and some used speecific chords to add color to their music. Some students even changed keys and changed time signature. We discussed compostition basics as well as specific color chords like secondary dominance. I love seeing students grow especially when they use theory and apply it in their own way.

Mr. Elijah and Mrs. Anna helped the students decorate and boy did they decorate! They used glitter, glue, super glue, ribbons, beads, googly eyes, and more. Some students even decorated their frame along with their sheet music. They all turned out lovely. Mrs. Anna judged all the compositions based on creativity, composition grammar, note accuracy, and performance. Each level had different criteria to meet. Preperatory level must have had at least twenty four measures, Elementary must have had at least thirty two measures. Intermediate level must have had at least forty eight measures.

Preparatory first place: Gennevieve Andrews - "Spiders in the House"

Elementary first place: Reagan Zeigler - "The Blue Jay's Flight"

Intermediate first place: Haley Storm - "Passing Star"
